FIFTEEN-year-old Dioka Dioka, from Ba-Galotlhare High School in Heuningvlei in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District, was inaugurated as the Northern Cape Junior Provincial Commissioner in Upington on May 7.
The day saw 18 pupils from different schools from the Province’s five districts participate in debating sessions for the position of Junior Provincial Commissioner.
The pupils were given an opportunity to debate on the topic ‘Why should you become the Junior Provincial Commissioner, how will you fight crime’.
The event was graced by the presence of the Acting Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Corporate Services, Brigadier Gilroy Tait, who outlined the purpose of the day, emphasising the involvement of pupils in the fight against crime.
During his keynote address, the Acting Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing; Brigadier Hennie Van Rensberg, encouraged pupils to embrace education.
Van Rensburg also encouraged them to participate in the fight against crime and to create a safe and secure environment, at schools and in their communities.
The pupils were adjudicated on their knowledge of the topic and their presentation skills.
Police spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana said the pupils displayed an in-depth understanding of what was expected of them during their presentations.
Deputy Junior Provincial Commissioners were also inaugurated on the day.
Danelle Jacobs, from Oosterhuizen High School in Kakamas in the ZF Mgcawu District, was crowned DPC for Policing.
Lusanda Selesho, from William Pescodia High School in Kimberly in the Frances Baard District, was crowned DPC for Crime Detection.
DPC for Corporate Services went to Lerato Mogadi Claudia Sebatane from Mogomotsi Secondary School in Warrenton in the Frances Baard District.
The Acting Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Corporate Services, Brigadier Gilroy Tait, presented the certificates of participation and floating trophies to the Junior Provincial Commissioner and her junior deputies.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Brigadier Joyce Ramar, who also applauded the pupils for their participation in the event.
