SENIOR officials from the Northern Cape Department of Health will return to court next year for pre-trial consultations ahead of court proceedings into the alleged irregular awarding of personal protective equipment (PPE) tenders in the Province.

The chief financial officer at the Department of Health, Mosimanegape Gaborone, and the former head of the department, Dr Dion Theys, made a brief appearance in the Kimberley Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on November 8.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said the two senior officials were facing charges of fraud and contravention of the provisions of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).

“Gaborone and Theys are alleged to have approved payments to two service providers amounting to over R43 million without following proper and adequate PFMA processes,” said Senokoatsane.

The accused are currently out on bail and are expected to return to court on January 24, 2022.
