A GRIQUATOWN emerging farmer was shot dead yesterday after apparently being involved in an argument with one of his workers.

While details were still sketchy yesterday, it is believed that the farmer, Willem van der Westhuizen, was from the farm Bont Heuwel, about 10km outside Griquatown.

According to information received yesterday, the suspect, believed to be a worker on the farm, sped off in Van der Westhuizen’s bakkie following the incident.

The suspect was apparently arrested shortly afterwards in a nearby residential area and was charged with murder.

It is believed that Van der Westhuizen had been living on the farm with his workers, while his family resided in Postmasburg.

The incident happened on the farm, but it could not be ascertained whether he was shot inside or outside the farmhouse.

It is believed that he died on the scene.

Van der Westhuizen farmed with cattle, sheep and goats and had been farming for around five years.
