NC dept to probe Covid outbreak in Namakwa District – 124 new cases

THE NORTHERN Cape Department of Health will launch an investigation into an outbreak of Covid-19 in the Namakwa District that saw 124 new infections recorded as of March 14.

There were 121 cases reported in the Hantam municipal area along with two cases in Nama Khoi and one case in Khâi-Ma.

The Minister of Health, Dr Zweli Mkhize, stated that this was the highest daily number of cases reported in the sub-district since the start of the pandemic.

“About 69 percent of the reported cases were traced to the Hantam Local Municipality, as a result of an ongoing localised outbreak under investigation,” said Mkhize.

He said that an additional 176 people tested positive, as of March 14, in the Northern Cape, bringing the cumulative total to 34,894 cases.

The ZF Mgcawu District recorded the second highest number of new cases – 27, followed by 11 cases in Pixley ka Seme, eight infections in John Taolo Gaetsewe and six cases in the Frances Baard District.

No new Covid-19-related deaths were reported in the Province.

The Province’s total cumulative deaths due to Covid-19 complications currently stands at 781.

The number of total active cases in the Province is 2,052 patients, while the recovery rate is 92 percent.

A total of 41 patients were reported to have recovered in the past 24 hours.
