THE IMPORTANCE of education and the impact it has on the lives of the youth was highlighted by the Northern Cape MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Desery Fienies, during the launch of the National Youth Camp.

The National Youth Camp is being hosted by the department in Grootdrink in Groblershoop from December 4 to 10.

The camp is hosted in partnership with the national Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, the Northern Cape Department of Education, Love Life and the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA).

One-hundred youngsters from across the Province were selected to participate in the event.

Fienies urged the participants to be focussed on their books as education will shape their futures.

“I know that the importance of education has been preached to you over and over again by your parents, educators and elders in the community and I am sure that you even speak about it amongst each other as friends. Education plays a great role in the life of everyone. The more knowledge we get, the more we grow and develop more in life. Being well educated never only means to earn certificates and a good salary from government and reputed companies or institutions, however, it also means to be a good and social person in life. Education and training impact on your ability to find work and also defines your level of income that you will enjoy one day. You need to equip yourself with education and training in

in order to be able to chart your own future. Nowadays you can study anything you want,” Fienies said.

The MEC added that education not only guarantees better career opportunities with greater financial opportunities but also a greater social standing.

“We are incomplete without a good education because education makes us right thinkers and correct decision makers. Education is able to provide solutions to all problems. It promotes good habits and awareness about the challenges we are faced with daily in our communities. Education offers inner and outer strength to a person. It is the fundamental right of everyone and capable of bringing any desired change and upliftment in the human mind and society,” she said.

She advised participants to not only focus on uplifting their own lives, but also to identify opportunities that can uplift their communities.

“Take advantage of opportunities that are offered. By attending the various youth camps you are now indeed taking advantage of these opportunities. Find out what your talents and your values are, but most importantly find out how you can serve your community instead of the community having to serve you.”
