MORE than 500 newly elected councillors in the Northern Cape are attending induction programmes this week.

An opening ceremony for the integrated councillor induction programme took place at the Northern Cape Moremogolo TVET campus on January 10.

The induction programme is taking place this week in all five districts of the Province, from January 10 to 14.

The executive mayor of the Frances Baard District Municipality, Unondumiso Buda, said at the official opening of the programme that the training would equip councillors at the coalface of service delivery as leaders and ensure that they understood legislations, municipal processes and developmental local government.

She believed that training for councillors should be an ongoing process.

“We are charged with a very huge responsibility, which is that of leading and serving our communities through the length and the breadth of our Province,” said Buda.

SA Local Government Association (Salga) facilitators from different provinces, including Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Gauteng, form part of the different teams offering the induction programme.

The provincial director for operations at Salga in the Northern Cape, Madeleinne Brandt, visited the different districts where the inductions are being held.

“This induction is just the beginning of more capacity and support programmes to come for municipalities in Northern Cape,” said Brandt.

She added that the five-day curriculum covered critical aspects of leadership in local government, including the code of conduct for councillors, ethical leadership, sound financial management and clear definitions of oversight roles for councils, governance structures in councils and their roles as well as accountability committees such as the Municipal Public Accounts Committee.
