A Ritchie police officer is fighting for his life after he was stabbed in the head by a suspect in Rietvale while enforcing the 21-day lockdown restrictions.

A POLICE officer from Ritchie is in a critical condition in the intensive care unit at Mediclinic Gariep hospital in Kimberley after he was stabbed in the head by a suspect in Rietvale on Tuesday while enforcing the 21-day lockdown restrictions.

The suspect was apparently shot in the elbow by another police officer during the incident.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Mohale Ramatseba said that two cases of attempted murder were opened at the Modderrivier police station after a police member was stabbed by a suspect and the suspect was consequently shot.

“It is alleged that on March 31, while the police were conducting patrol duties to enforce the disaster management regulation, they saw a suspect walking in the street holding a knife. When approached, the suspect stabbed one of the members and in the process the suspect was shot in the arm.”

Ramatseba said that the police officer who was stabbed was currently in hospital.

The patient experience manager at Mediclinic Gariep, Denise Coetzee, said that the patient was admitted and was in a “critical condition”.

“The 33-year-old suspect is in custody after receiving medical attention for a minor injury and is expected to appear in court soon. The police investigation continues,” concluded Ramatseba.
