N Cape men gets 20 years in jail for rape

The 22-year-old raped a 37-year-old woman.

A 22-YEAR-old man, Manual Mogamedi, was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment by the De Aar Regional Court for raping a 37-year-old woman.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Mashay Gamieldien said the incident occurred on September 15, 2018.

“The victim was returning from a tavern at approximately 2am on the day of the incident. She was accosted by the suspect, who was wearing a balaclava at the time. He threatened her and demanded money. When she told him she had no money, he assaulted and raped her and stole her cellphone,” said Gamieldien.

She said the suspect was arrested on June 18, 2020.

“The perseverance and commitment of the investigating officer, Sergeant Lebogang Serati, eventually led to the apprehension of the suspect. The suspect remained in custody until he was sentenced on May 11, 2020,” said Gamieldien.

She said the IO was commended for his sterling investigation.

“The provincial head of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit in the Northern Cape, Brigadier Nicky Mills, applauded Sergeant Serati for his dedication and commitment in ensuring that perpetrators of gender-based violence are brought to justice,” said Gamieldien.
