A NORTHERN Cape man, Phomolo Ferdinand Poleng, 28, was sentenced to 10 years’ direct imprisonment for rape by the Mothibistad Regional Court.

The incident dates back to July 17, 2012, when the 28-year-old female victim met Poleng at the Kagung hitch-hiking spot in Mothibistad.

Poleng told the woman that he forgot a bag at his home and asked her to accompany him there.

Upon arrival at the residence he assaulted and raped her.

The victim managed to escape and reported the incident to a neighbour and informed the police.

Poleng went on the run but was arrested on August 28, 2013 and remained in custody until his sentencing on March 2, 2022.

The provincial head of Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS), Brigadier Nicky Mills, lauded Detective Constable Kentse Seloge from the Kuruman FCS for her “meticulous and professional investigation” that led to the “outstanding” sentence.
