A 40-YEAR-old Northern Cape mother was sentenced in the Carnarvon Regional Court on April 4 for brutally assaulting her 12-year-old son after accusing him of stealing money from his stepfather.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said the boy was “severely assaulted” until he collapsed.

“The accused assaulted the child in his face and on his body on September 28, at about 9pm. She only stopped severely assaulting him when his aunt intervened,” said Kock.

He added that the boy was hospitalised and his mother was arrested.

“The child was removed from her care and social workers placed him under the foster care of his aunt.”

Kock said the mother was found guilty of assault with intent to commit grievous bodily harm (GBH).

“She was sentenced to six years imprisonment, which was wholly suspended for five years. Her name was also entered into the national register for child protection and she was declared unfit to possess a firearm.”

The SAPS management in the Northern Cape commended Detective Warrant Officer Floris Fritz from the Carnarvon Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for his “meticulous investigation of the case”.

“Crimes perpetrated against women and children remain a priority for the SAPS,” Kock reiterated.
