A NORTHERN Cape mother is facing charges of murder and fraud after she allegedly benefited from an insurance claim following the death of her child under questionable circumstances.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said the accused, Agnes Segomotsi Setshwantsho, had insured her child’s life for a large sum of money.
“She is facing charges of murder and fraud in the Kuruman District Court. The accused made an insurance claim after the passing of her child under suspicious circumstances at Kuruman Hospital,” said Senokoatsane.
He added that the accused was denied bail in the Mmabatho District Court on January 19, where she was also facing similar charges.
“She was arrested in November 2023 after investigations led by the police uncovered similar incidents where her family members, whom she had insured, died under mysterious circumstances. She was charged with murder and insurance fraud and is still in custody.”
Senokoatsane said that the accused was remanded in custody until her next appearance in the Kuruman District Court on March 12.
“The case was postponed for further investigation and the appointment of attorney representation.”
