A SEARCH and rescue operation that was launched for a 95-year-old Douglas man, Jan Visser, ended on a happy note after the missing man was reunited with his family.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said the search operation was a joint effort.

“The provincial SAPS Search and Rescue team, SAPS Mounted unit, Douglas SAPS, Douglas Community Police Forum (CPF) and the general public searched tirelessly for Visser on the weekend,” said Kock.

“Visser was last seen at his house in Douglas on Friday evening, March 18, 2022. Police were informed and started searching early on Saturday morning, March 19, and fine-combed Douglas and surrounding areas.”

Kock said Visser was found near a squatter camp.

“With the support and assistance of the community, the police found Visser with his bicycle near Campbell squatter camp in Douglas. The police immediately took him for a medical examination and he was safely reunited with his relatives.”

Kock thanked the community for their assistance in the matter.

“The SAPS management lauds the SAPS members, the CPF and the community for their tireless and relentless search efforts that led to the location of Jan Visser,” added Kock.
