IN A RECENT ruling by the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court, a 22-year-old man received a four-year prison sentence for raping a 12-year-old girl at a mental health facility.

Sergeant Molefi Shemane, a spokesperson for the Northern Cape police, commended Detective Sergeant Neo Noge of the Kimberley SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit for his diligent work in leading the investigation and securing the conviction of the perpetrator.

Evidence presented before court revealed that the young victim, who has mental challenges, was attacked on the evening of February 4, 2023, when she went to the bathroom after having supper at the mental hospital.

The girl was grabbed by a 22-year-old male patient at the facility, who pushed her inside the bathroom, locked the door and raped her.

The perpetrator was apprehended after hospital management alerted authorities following the victim informing them about the incident.

The man was arrested and bail was successfully denied. The court convicted and sentenced him to four years direct imprisonment.

The court’s decision included not only imprisonment but also a mandate that the offender’s name be added to the National Child Protection Register.
