Memorial service for 11 young people killed in N14 crash

Members of the Youth of John Taolo Gaetsewe will hold a mass memorial service at the Thabo Moorosi multipurpose centre in Mothibistad, Kuruman in remembrance of the 11 young people who died in an accident on the N14 on September 4.

The accident happened outside of Kuruman when an Audi and a Volkswagen Golf collided. The police indicated that according to preliminary investigations the accident occurred when one of the vehicles tried to overtake another vehicle.

The six occupants of the Audi and five occupants of the Volkswagen Golf all succumbed to their injuries and were declared dead on the scene.

The spokesperson of the Youth of John Taolo Gaetsewe, Olebogeng Leserwane, said members had contributed money for the memorial service that will take place from 11am at the Thabo Moorosi multipurpose centre on Thursday.

“The deceased are all under the age of 35 years. Three were students and eight were adults. They all come from different areas of Kuruman including Seodin, Mothibistad and Washington. The one vehicle was travelling back to Washington from town while the other vehicle was travelling from Vryburg to Kuruman at the time of the accident,” said Leserwane.

He added that a candle lighting ceremony would be held on Friday at 3pm at the Mothibistad four-way intersection at the accident scene on the N14.

“The ceremony will be held at the same time that the accident took place. A convoy will also proceed to the scene.”

Leserwane indicated that the funerals would be held on Saturday.
