AS THE Northern Cape Provincial Legislature (NCPL) gears up for the 6th legislature, various portfolio committees have been established and members elected to serve on these committees.

Spokesperson for the NCPL, Carmen Gopane, explained yesterday that over the past 25 years of legislative democracy, the provincial legislature had developed systems, structures and procedures in order to discharge its constitutional mandate to conduct oversight of organs of state through its committees.

“In conducting oversight, a committee can either request a briefing from the organ of state or visit the organ of state for fact-finding, while it will also consider the annual reports of organs of state and the auditor-general’s reports.”
