LOCAL models Mario Neels, 23, and Chaunees Abbott, 19, were crowned as the pageant winners of Mr and Miss Northern Cape 2020 at the Horseshoe Inn on the weekend.

The winners handed over funds that they raised during the competition to Sebastian’s School and Shelter for the Disabled in Ritchie.

They will also organise a pageant party in Ritchie in the near future.

Abbott is a second year Bachelor of Education student at Sol Plaatje University (SPU) who has competed in several beauty pageants including Mej Groenmyn 2019, Mej Voorslag 2019, Miss Golden SA 2019, Miss Black Ribbon 2019 and was Mej Cansa Matrieknooi 2nd Princess 2017.

She was scouted to take part in the International Arts Talent showcase in Johannesburg at the end of the month after participating in the Northern Cape Fusion Weekend 2019.

Abbott is a finalist for Mr and Miss Campus SPU and held her first pageant, Mr and Miss URCSA Florianville.

At the official Mr and Miss Northern Cape she also won the social media award, public choice award and the debutant goods award.

Neels, who studied film and television production at ATTI College, was placed first place in the J-Walkers pageant 2019, placed first prince at the Nocci Mr Business pageant 2019 and is working part-time as a banqueting worker at the Horseshoe Inn in Kimberley.

At the official Mr and Miss Northern Cape he also placed overall best in his interview.

Both winners will compete at the Kimberly Fun Fair talent show at the end of the month.

Mandy de Klerk, owner of the official Mr and Miss Northern Cape Pageant (Pty) Ltd, said that the first pageant was a big success, with 26 contestants from Kimberley, Galeshewe, Bloemfontein and Kathu taking part.

She said the pageant consisted of a public choice award, where members of the public voted for the winner on the Facebook pageant site.
