IN A MOVE to bolster community relations and address local challenges, the MEC for Coghsta and Transport, Safety and Liaison, Bentley Vass, alongside acting provincial commissioner Major-General Luntu Ngubelanga, hosted a community imbizo at the Kagung Community Hall in Mothibistad, Kuruman, this week.

The event, held on August 28, saw the participation of key figures including the regional commissioner for Correctional Services in the Free State and Northern Cape, Commissioner Subashni Moodley, Kgosi TD Jantjies representing Traditional Leaders, H Mashiyane from the Department of Home Affairs, SAPS district commissioners and provincial heads, advocate Mpho Tau from the National Prosecuting Authority, and T Kedithibetse, the District Community Police Forum chairperson.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers highlighted that the engagement aimed to foster stronger relationships between the community and law enforcement. The initiative is seen as a crucial step in addressing the challenges faced by both the SAPS and the community.

The platform also provided an opportunity to rebuild trust in the SAPS and facilitated dialogue between the police and relevant government departments. The John Taolo Gaetsewe district commissioner, Major-General Jonny Besnaar, outlined the purpose of the engagement, while messages of support were delivered by Kgosi Jantjies, Commissioner Moodley, and Mashiyane.

Major-General Ngubelanga emphasized the importance of sound partnerships and encouraged the community to reclaim their streets from criminals. He also addressed the dangers of substance and alcohol abuse.

He further urged the community to utilise the services offered by the SAPS Inspectorate component for lodging complaints about police services.

In his keynote address, MEC Vass called for solidarity within the community to enhance overall security. He stressed the vital role of community structures and encouraged residents to join community and neighbourhood watch structures.

Vass also highlighted the priority of addressing crimes against children and advocated for a zero-tolerance approach towards gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) offences.

Community members were given the chance to voice their concerns and share information with the panel, who responded accordingly.

The engagement concluded with a vote of thanks from Kedithibetse of the District Community Policing Forum.

Colonel Ehlers said that ongoing community engagements are planned throughout the John Taolo Gaetsewe District to continue addressing concerns and strengthening partnerships.
