SOL PLAATJE executive mayor Kagisho Sonyoni has denied that either the acting corporate services director, George Mosimane, or the municipal manager, Thapelo Matlala, were suspended.

Sonyoni stated that “there was nothing of the sort”.

Councillors have also pointed out that a municipal manager can only be suspended by council.

The next council meeting is scheduled to sit on Thursday.

Meanwhile, protests have subsided in Greenpoint after Sonyoni met with community members on Monday, where he promised to resolve service delivery issues as well as the grievances that were made against the local ward councillor.

Sonyoni said the protesters who had obstructed traffic in Dutch Reformed Street and on the N8 on Monday had dispersed after he had addressed them.

Sonyoni said chemical (portable) toilets would be provided at the informal settlement in Diamond Park.

“A team will assess other service delivery issues in Greenpoint, including sewage problems, and a follow-up meeting will be held on February 2 with the community.”

He added that the municipality would engage with Ekapa mine to avail 10 hectares of land for the establishment of an informal settlement.

Sonyoni stated that he had met with Floors residents after they blockaded the intersection between Church and Recreation streets on January 12.

“They were protesting about load shedding and I explained to them that this is a national crisis and is not the responsibility of the municipality.”

He indicated that many of the grievances raised would be addressed in the Integrated Development Programme.
