SOL PLAATJE executive mayor Kagisho Sonyoni has condemned the rape of three girls who were allegedly molested by their biological father in Madiba Square over a period of time.
The accused appeared in the Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Sonyoni stated that the incident represented a “total disregard” for children’s safety.
“Their sense of well-being can never be normalised. The news of this incident is devastating to the community,” said Sonyoni.
“Rape remains one of the biggest challenges facing South African society, with a third of girls in the country experiencing some form of sexual violence during their lifetime – often at the hands of someone they know. The rape of a child is a degrading.”
Sonyoni applauded the girls for reporting their abuse.
“It is unfortunate that in South Africa many such cases go unreported. If reported, they seldom come out in the open, as cultural and social norms are highly influential in allowing rape to be swept under the carpet.”
He pledged solidarity with the three siblings as well as with all victims of rape and indicated that he will convene a community meeting in ward 8 on Tuesday afternoon.
“I am confident that the judicial system will ensure that justice is served for these girls and trust that the perpetrator will be served with the harshest sentence.”
