A 26-YEAR-old man had both his legs amputated when a train drove over him in Modder River near Ritchie Saturday afternoon.

It is believed the man was under the influence of alcohol and fell asleep on the train tracks when the incident happened.

The patient was stabilised at the scene by paramedics from the Department of Health Emergency Services and ER24.

The police were called to the scene.

The patient was rushed to a Kimberley hospital by ER24.
