The residents of a nearby informal settlement say they are living in fear as a number of bodies have been discovered in the “notorious” veld in the past.
THE BODY of a man was found in the veld near the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature on Tuesday afternoon and residents of the nearby Madiba Park informal settlement say that they have been living in fear.
The discovery was made by two boys from the informal settlement at around 2pm after they went to relieve themselves in the veld.
The boys described how shocked they were to find the body covered in blood.
It is believed that the man was stabbed and then dumped in a ditch in the veld.
“I first spotted the white Nike sneakers and then told my friend that a dead man was in the bush. We went closer to inspect and found the body covered in flies and lying on its back,” said one of the boys.
The boy said they rushed home to call his mother, who does not live far from the scene.
Residents of Madiba Park have meanwhile said that Tuesday’s discovery of the body was “no real surprise” as a number of bodies have been found in the “notorious” veld in the past.
They said the last body was discovered during winter earlier this year by women who went into the veld.
Many of the residents said they were afraid of going to the veld, but they pointed out that they have no choice but to relieve themselves in the veld because they do not have toilets.
“This veld is dangerous during the day and at night. More than three bodies were found here in the seven years that we have been staying here,” they said.
“It has become a routine for us women to group ourselves on a daily basis to go into the veld to relieve ourselves,” said a woman.
“That is how we make these gruesome discoveries or meet dodgy characters.
“Terrifying things happen here. And it gets worse during summer because the vegetation becomes denser and criminals are not afraid to move around late at night.
“We hear people screaming at night but we are too afraid to come out to enquire.
“The men also fear for their lives and avoid the veld.
“But, we can’t avoid the veld, because we are desperate for places to stay.”
The residents also complained about the “unbearable” sewage stench that they have to endure on a daily basis.
The police had not responded to media enquiries by the time of publication.
