IN A RECENT ruling, the Sutherland Regional Court handed down a seven-year prison sentence to 33-year-old Tertius October for sexual assault.

The conviction stems from the “intentional sexual touching” of a 12-year-old girl in Sutherland on April 20.

According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam, the victim was at her home with friends when October forcibly grabbed her arm and engaged in inappropriate touching. The girl’s screams prompted October to flee the scene.

The victim promptly reported the incident to her father, who alerted the police. Subsequently, officers arrested October.

The court imposed a seven-year prison term for sexual assault, with two years suspended for five years on the condition that October refrains from committing any other related crime.

Additionally, October was declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Northern Cape provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola commended the investigating officer, Detective Constable Jacques Nielsen, for ensuring that those who violate children’s rights through exploitation, abuse, neglect, or harmful practices are held accountable.
