A 29-YEAR-old Northern Cape man, who was convicted of raping a 61-year-old woman in Gamokatedi village, Tsineng in 2021, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Kuruman Regional Court.

According to provincial SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam, the incident occurred on September 24, 2021, while the accused, Tholang Milton Mokgoro, and the woman were counting livestock at their kraals.

“They left the kraals together after they had finished counting. On the way home the accused suddenly grabbed the complainant’s arm and forced her to the ground and raped her,” said Sam.

“The accused fled, leaving the woman lying on the ground. She chased after him but could not find him as he ran away from the residence.”

Sam added that the victim reported the incident to both Mokgoro’s grandmother and the police.

“The accused was arrested two days later. He was subsequently found guilty of rape and was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. His name will be entered into the national register for sex offenders and he was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.”

The acting provincial commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, Major-General Luntu Ngubelanga, and his management welcomed the sentence handed down to Mokgoro and commended the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Matshidiso John Boikanyo, for ensuring that the accused was brought to book.
