Man sentenced to 17 years for robbing, raping 60-year-old woman

A Northern Cape man was sentenced to 17 years’ direct imprisonment for breaking into the home of a 60-year-old woman in Prieska and raping her.

A NORTHERN Cape man, Fabian Phooko, was sentenced to 17 years direct imprisonment for breaking into the home of a 60-year-old woman in Prieska and raping her.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said that Phooko, along with Alton Stuurman and Stephan Steenkamp, was accused of breaking into the house on September 20, 2020.

“Phooko stole valuable items, assaulted the granny with a hammer and raped her,” said Kock.

He added that the three men were arrested a few days later.

“The cases against Stuurman and Steenkamp were withdrawn, while Phooko was found guilty of rape, housebreaking and theft and was sentenced to 17 years imprisonment by the Prieska Regional Court. He was also declared unfit to carry a firearm.”

The acting deputy provincial commissioner for crime detection, Brigadier Nicky Mills, commended the investigating officer,Sergeant Riaan van Wyk from the Prieska SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit, for his “meticulous investigation that led to the incarceration of the accused”.
