AN ACCUSED, Thabo Mokgosi, 33, was sentenced to 21 years imprisonment in the Kuruman regional court after he was found guilty on charges of rape, kidnapping, housebreaking and theft on May 4.

Captain Olebogeng Tawana said the accused was in the company of a woman and her boyfriend in Bankhara village near Kuruman on January 18 2020.

“They were seated together when Mokgosi gave the woman’s boyfriend R15 to buy home brewed beer.

“At about 9.45pm he came back and stormed into the residence of the victim and her boyfriend, demanding his R15. The woman’s boyfriend refused him entry into their house. He forced his way into the house and grabbed the victim out of her bed and dragged her outside. He had a steel pipe in his hand and threatened to kill the victim’s boyfriend if he tried to rescue her.”

He added that the accused dragged the woman to his house where he kept her the entire night and raped her repeatedly.

“The woman managed to escape during the early hours of January 19, 2020 and reported the incident to the police. The accused was arrested immediately.”

Tawana stated that the accused remained in custody during the duration of the trial, as the investigating officer successfully opposed bail.

“Mokgosi was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for the rape, three years for kidnapping, three years for housebreaking and theft.

“He was also found unfit to possess a firearm and his name was registered on the national sexual offenders register.”

The Northern Cape provincial head of the Family Child and Sexual Offences Unit, Brigadier Nicky Mills, applauded Constable Keitshwaretswe Schoeman for his excellent investigative work that resulted in the conviction.
