MURDER accused Sandile Vaaibooi, 34, from Barkly West, who was charged with the murder of two family members and the attempted murder of his cousin – a police officer – now faces three counts of murder after the officer died in hospital.

National prosecuting authority regional spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said on Tuesday that the police officer who Vaaibooi attacked had sustained severe injuries.

“It is alleged that on March 18 the accused forcefully entered the home of his uncle, Patrick Vaaibooi, and his partner, Angelina Kgatlane. Upon entering their home, the accused began attacking them and killed them both,” said Senokoatsane.

“After killing the two victims, the accused visited another relative on the other side of town, who is a member of the South African Police Service, where he continued to attack him, severely injuring the victim. He later died in hospital.

“The accused continued to damage property, including the vehicles of the victims. The accused was later arrested by members of the police in Barkly West.”

Senokoatsane added that Vaaibooi was facing three counts of murder as well as assault and malicious property damage.

“The case was postponed until April 25 in the Barkly West district court and the accused remains in custody.”
