PAUL Sergio Martin Bernando, 51, appeared before the Port Nolloth Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for illegal dealing in unpolished diamonds and was granted bail of R30,000.

Bernando was arrested during a “takedown operation” conducted by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, in conjunction with Springbok Public Order Policing, in Port Nolloth on Monday.

The case was postponed to June 13.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Tebogo Thebe said Bernando was allegedly involved in a number of diamond transactions worth R144,000.

Bernando was born in Angola but has a South African identification document.

“The police recovered three diamond lights, five diamond scales, two calculators, a diamond loop, a diamond classified sieve and a diamond scope tester,” said Thebe.

The Hawks’ provincial head, Major-General Kholekile Galawe, lauded the team for “a job well done”.
