Although many may say that children tend to exaggerate or imagine things, I could see a clear change in behaviour from my child

THE CASE of a 35-year-old father who is accused of raping his four-year-old son was postponed by the Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

It is alleged that the incident occurred on March 14, 2020 and the matter was reported to the police on March 16.

The mother of the child said that she has been painted as an “instigator” by the accused’s family.

“I still cannot understand why he (the father) would hurt my child in such a manner. His family now accuses me of wanting rivalry between us, but what would my reasons behind such rivalry be? Plus, I would never use my child to fight my battles and to spread such heinous lies about his own father,” the mother said.

She added that her wish is for justice to prevail in this matter.

“My child has changed since this incident. Although many may say that children tend to exaggerate or imagine things, I could see a clear change in behaviour from my child. My son was a very active child but now he is reserved and displays violent and angry behaviour. I know my son and this is not something he would just make up. It is my priority to protect him. My wish is for the justice system to play its part and to protect my child as it is clear that this matter has traumatised him.”

She claimed that the accused’s family have not shown any support for her son.

“In a matter like this one, I would expect the family to embrace the child. However, they are supporting the accused and not the victim. This is a very young child who cannot comprehend why his own father would do something like this. As much as they want to protect the accused, they were supposed to reach out to my son as he is suffering in this matter. All the family has done is to insult me,” she said.

The case was postponed and the accused remains in custody.
