WINDSORTON resident Joseph Might, who had been struggling to get around on a pair of broken crutches since before the national Covid-19 lockdown, has been testing out his new prosthetic leg that was fitted in Pretoria last week.

Might’s leg had to be amputated following an injury that he sustained during a mining accident in 2008.

The Workmen’s Compensation Fund refused to replace his prosthetic leg after he apparently set it alight.

During the lockdown, his family found him in Christiana, where he was attempting to walk with the use of a pair of broken crutches from Windsorton to Pretoria in search of assistance.

Following the intervention of a Good Samaritan, the Workmen’s Compensation Fund approved a quotation to have a new prosthesis made.

He stated that Might was able to immediately move around with his new prosthetic leg after it was fitted.

“We will just have to do some minor adjustments and make changes to the socket, as the stump may change because he has not been using one for such a long time. There may also be some changes if he gains or loses weight.”

Candice Might added that her uncle was “like a new person” after he was fitted with his new prosthesis.

“He is moving around much easier and said that he has no pain. He is very happy and grateful for his new leg and is not as frustrated and despondent as he was because he thought that no one cared about him.”

She added that Might said it was a “joy” to be able to make use of a pair of shoes. “When he only had the use of one leg, we did not know what to do with the second shoe.

“We have stored all the crutches that were donated to him. His pension money has also finally been sorted out.”

She added that she would ensure that her uncle took good care of his new prosthetic leg.

“I reminded him about how long he had to wait and struggle before he received his new prosthetic limb.”
