Man gets 22 years for brutal murder of ex-girlfriend

A 49-year-old Northern Cape man was sentenced to 22 years imprisonment for stabbing his 37-year-old ex-girlfriend to death in her bedroom.

A NORTHERN Cape man, Dawid Baster, 49, was sentenced to 22 years imprisonment after being convicted of the murder of his 37-year-old ex-girlfriend.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said the deceased was stabbed 14 times with a knife at her home in Zwelitsha informal settlement in Marydale on October 13 last year.

The deceased, Elmarie van Wyk, was attacked in her bedroom after Baster kicked the door open. He stabbed her several times and she died on the scene.

Baster was arrested hours later by the police in Marydale.

Kock said that Baster was sentenced in the Northern Cape High Court on February 16, where he was handed down a sentence of 20 years for murder and two years for housebreaking with the intent to commit an offence.

The provincial commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, commended Detective Sergeant Lowellen Smit from Marydale Detectives for his “meticulous investigation” of the matter.

Otola added that gender-based violence and femicide remained a priority crime and the SAPS would continue to protect the most vulnerable members of society.
