Man gets 20 years for raping 13-year-old girl

The girl was playing in the street when the accused accosted and dragged her to the nearby veld where he raped and assaulted her.

A MAN was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in the Olifantshoek regional court on Tuesday, after he was found guilty of raping a 13-year-old girl.

The girl was playing in the street when the accused accosted and dragged her to the nearby veld where he raped and assaulted her on August 30 2015.

Northern Cape police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Sello said the girl’s cousin who was also a minor tried to intervene but was chased away and was threatened with a knife by the accused Andy Katlolo Melwane, 30.

“Melwane was later arrested and was convicted and sentenced on September 7 after several court appearances. He was sentenced to 20 years for rape and five years for assault. The sentences will run concurrently.”

The Provincial Head for Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) in the Northern Cape, Brigadier Nicky Mills welcomed the sentence and applauded the investigating officer, Sergeant Boikanyo Pilane from the Kathu FCS for the meticulous investigation.

“No stone will be left unturned in the fight against any form of crime or violence perpetrated against women and children.”
