The provincial commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, and her management team have welcomed the 15-year prison sentence handed down to a 25-year-old man for the brutal assault and rape of a 34-year-old woman in Kuruman.
LIEUTENANT-General Koliswa Otola, the provincial commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, and her management team have welcomed the 15-year prison sentence handed down by the Mothibistad Regional Court to 25-year-old Lekwe Moeng.
The conviction followed the brutal assault and rape of a 34-year-old woman in Bothitong, Kuruman, on June 6, 2022.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said the court proceedings revealed that Moeng repeatedly assaulted and raped the victim after forcibly dragging her into his residence. The harrowing ordeal ended when the victim was eventually released by Moeng and she reported the incident to the police. Subsequently, Moeng was apprehended and brought to justice.
According to Sam, the court found Moeng guilty of two counts of rape on April 10. In addition to the 15-year prison term handed down, he was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
Lieutenant-General Otola commended the meticulous investigative work carried out by Detective Sergeant Jasmine Armstrong from the Kuruman SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. The dedication and thoroughness of the investigation ensured that justice prevailed for the victim.
Sam added that the Northern Cape police will remain unwavering in their commitment to serving justice and protecting victims of gender-based violence.
The sentencing of Moeng serves as a stern warning to those who perpetrate violence against women: justice will prevail and the law will hold them accountable for their actions.
