A NORTHERN Cape man who attempted to murder his ex-girlfriend and assaulted their minor child by attacking them with an axe has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by the Kuruman Regional Court.

The incident took place on December 2, 2023, during the early hours of the morning, when the accused, Letlhogonolo Sejake, 50, woke up his former partner who was asleep in her home in Bankhara and started assaulting her and their son.

SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Merapelo Pilane said on Wednesday that the child, who was seriously injured in the attack, managed to flee the scene.

“The accused was arrested later the same day after the incident was reported to the police.

“The investigating officer, Sergeant Solomon Adries Monnaatshitlho attached to the Kuruman Detective unit, through a diligent investigation, ensured that the accused was subsequently found guilty as charged,” said Pilane.

He added that the accused was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment, of which five years were suspended on condition that he was not found guilty of the same offence within that period.

“The accused was further handed six years imprisonment for the assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and the sentences will run concurrently. The accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.”
