A 27-year-old Northern Cape man who was found guilty of raping an 18-year-old teenager has been sentenced to 13 years imprisonment by the Kuruman Regional Court.
A 27-YEAR-old man who was found guilty of raping an 18-year-old woman has been sentenced to 13 years imprisonment by the Kuruman Regional Court.
The incident took place in Maruping village on August 21, 2021, when the accused gained entry into the woman’s home.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said on Tuesday that the accused threatened the teenager at knife-point and sexually assaulted her.
“After the assault, the victim managed to escape and alerted the police.
The police tracked and arrested Oupa Petrus Moremi. He was recently sentenced to 13 years direct imprisonment for rape,” said Sam.
The provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, and her management team welcomed the conviction and commended the investigating officer, Detective Constable Kentse Mokgosi from the Kuruman SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit, for her “thorough investigative work”.
“The detectives will remain relentless in ensuring that justice is served for victims of GBVF (gender-based violence and femicide),” Sam concluded.
