AN ACCURSED has been sentenced to ten years imprisonment in the Victoria West sexual offences court after he was found guilty of raping his two nieces.

National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane on Thursday said the 58-year-old accused was charged for raping his nieces from 2001-2003.

“The alleged crimes occurred when the two sisters were aged 10 and 11-years-old. The sisters not knowing that both had been raped by their uncle, both shared their rape ordeals with their parents.

“The matter was reported to the police and the accused was arrested in Victoria West in March 2011.”

He added that the accused was granted bail in 2011.

“The complainants withdrew the charges, but in 2019 decided to proceed with the cases. The docket was re-opened and the accused was then arrested on a warrant. The accused pleaded guilty to two charges of common law rape and was convicted by Magistrate A Venter.”

Senokoatsane stated that the court sentenced him to 10 years direct imprisonment.

“The offender’s name and particulars will be entered into the national register of sexual offenders. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.”

The state who was represented by Advocate van Wyk emphasised the need to mete out harsh sentences for perpetrators of GBV, during pre-sentencing procedures.

He argued that a clear message should be sent that perpetrators would be prosecuted no matter how old the crime was and encouraged victims of sexual abuse to report GBV offences.
