Murder accused Rodrich Riaan Francke was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment in the Northern Cape High Court on February 7 after he was found guilty of killing a 16-year-old girl whose body was discovered in the veld in Breipaal, near Douglas.

The girl’s body was found half-naked with her throat slit on June 6, 2019.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Dimakatso Mooi said the girl was reported missing on June 2 last year and her body was later found by the SAPS search and rescue team.

Mooi said that Francke remained in custody for the duration of his trial.

She said Francke was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment for murder, 12 months for theft of a cellphone and nine months for defeating the ends of justice. All sentences will run concurrently.

Mooi added that the SAPS provincial management welcomed the sentence and applauded the investigating officer, Sergeant Jacobus Frans April from the Douglas detectives unit, as well as the community for its assistance in the case. – Staff Reporter
