THE HAWKS’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team and Serious Corruption Investigation arrested a 40-year-old man on March 22 after he was found in possession of 0.52 grams of tik in February last year.

Hawks provincial spokesperson Captain Tebogo Thebe said on Saturday that a docket was opened and taken to the senior public prosecutor (SPP) for a decision last year.

“The SPP decided to charge the accused and he was informed accordingly. He was expected to appear in court in December 2021. A warrant of arrest was issued when the accused failed to appear in court as expected,” said Thebe.

He added that a long tracing operation ensued for the accused.

“At some stage, the accused was said to be in Groblersdal followed by Klerksdorp in the North West. The police followed up on information and established that he had fled to Gariep in the Groblershoop area.

“On March 22, 2022, information was received that the fugitive was in Upington and intended to leave Upington by bus. A team was put together and apprehended the accused as he was about to board the bus.”

Thebe said the accused is expected to appear in the Upington Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
