A 26-year-old man is expected to appear in court next week, after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend, hit her over the head with a pick axe handle, raped her and set her body alight.
He was arrested by the SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit in Galeshewe on charges of attempted murder and rape on October 7 at around 8am.
The incident took place near the Tlhageng shanties in Galeshewe on October 2 at around 3.30am.
Police spokesperson Captain Bashoabile Kale said the woman was on her way home after visiting a nearby tavern at the time of the incident.
“She phoned her boyfriend and asked him to meet her halfway. Along the way she met another male person from the neighbourhood, who accompanied her home.”
He added that en route, the complainant made a quick stop over at the shack of the person who accompanied her home.
“The suspect entered the shack while his girlfriend was seated inside. He assaulted his girlfriend with his fists and hit her over the head with a pick axe handle until she fell to the ground.
“After the assault, the suspect took the victim to their shack at Tlhageng, where he poured paraffin over her and set her alight. He then sexually assaulted her while interrogating her about what she was doing in another man’s shack. The victim was seriously injured and hospitalised.”
Kale stated that the suspect was expected to appear in the Galeshewe magistrate court on October 11 on charges of attempted murder and rape.
The provincial head for Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Brigadier Nicky Mills commended Captain Sabata Tsiu for the swift arrest of the suspect.
