THE POLICE have arrested a 22-year-old man after he allegedly raped an 11-year-old girl in Hartswater over the weekend.

A family member indicated that the girl was apparently lured by the suspect to Bonita Park while she was on her way home from a tuckshop.

“The suspect is well known as he stays in the same street. Following the incident the child was taken to hospital where it was confirmed that she had been raped.”

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Dimakatso Mooi, confirmed that the incident happened on Saturday at about 7pm.

“The girl and her younger sister went to a local tuck-shop where they saw the suspect and requested him to give them money to buy sweets.

“The suspect, who is known to them, told them he did not have money with him but the girl could come with him to collect his money.

“The young sister was sent home by the suspect and he left with the complainant. Along the way he allegedly raped her and told her to go home and not tell anyone what happened.”

She added that the matter was reported to the police and the suspect was arrested.

“He is expected to appear in the Hartswater Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday August 25 on charges of rape.”
