The police in the ZF Mgcawu District have arrested a 49-year-old man after discovering 289 gas cylinders allegedly filled with substandard gas in his possession.
A 49-YEAR-old man was arrested by the ZF Mgcawu District police after 289 gas cylinders that were allegedly filled with substandard gas were found in his possession.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Omphile Masegela said officers received information about a suspect who allegedly went to collect illegally filled gas bottles to sell in the ZF Mgcawu area.
“The police made the discovery of the illegal gas on Sunday, September 29, 2024. It is alleged that the gas cylinders were filled at an unregistered refilling station. The gas is a substandard gas, which is thus in contravention of the law. It was also discovered that registered trademark cylinders were used to reseal and refill the illegal gas,” said Masegela.
“The truck with a trailer was stopped outside Upington and 289 filled gas bottles of various sizes and brands were discovered. The brand holders were contacted for confirmation and they had no knowledge of it. The cylinders were valued at R273,260. The truck and trailer were also seized. The suspect was arrested on charges of contravention of the Consumer Production Act as well as contravention of the Counterfeit Goods Act.”
