A 23-YEAR-old man, Lawak Lorenzo Henzel, who is accused of stabbing his three-year-old stepson to death, was denied bail by the Petrusville District Court.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Northern Cape spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said the prosecution opposed the bail application given the seriousness of the charges against Henzel.

“On July 25, 2022, the accused (Henzel) is alleged to have had an argument with the toddler’s mother. The mother was the accused’s former girlfriend. The toddler’s mother went to the accused’s house to collect her clothes but the accused refused her entry into the house. The mother walked away and the accused refused to hand over the toddler. The mother was accompanied back to the accused’s house by the police. Upon their arrival, they found the toddler’s body with multiple stab wounds. The accused was found hiding under the bed and was arrested and charged with murder,” said Senkoatsane.

Henzel appeared in court on a charge of murder on October 21 and was denied bail.

“He is remanded in custody and will appear in court again on November 29, 2022, for the Director of Public Prosecution’s decision on a forum for trial,” said Senkoatsane.
