A 25-year-old Northern Cape man was sentenced to 14 years in prison by the Calvinia Regional Court for raping a 27-year-old woman in Loeriesfontein on June 4, 2022.
THE NORTHERN Cape provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, and her management team have welcomed the prison sentence handed down to a Loeriesfontein rapist.
This after the Calvinia Regional Court sentenced 25-year-old Fortune Koordom to 14 years in prison for the rape of a 27-year-old woman in Loeriesfontein on June 4, 2022.
According to provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam, the court heard that Koordom attacked the victim as she was entering her home, dragging her under a tree where he raped her.
In the process, he also violated a protection order that the victim had previously obtained against him.
Following his arrest, Koordom was charged with rape and contravention of a protection order. On April 18, 2024, the court found him guilty of one count of rape and sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment. An additional four-year sentence was imposed for contravening the protection order. Both sentences will run concurrently.
In addition to his prison sentence, Koordom was declared unfit to possess a firearm. His name will also be recorded in the National Register for Sex Offenders.
Lieutenant-General Otola commended the investigating officer, Detective Constable Jacques Nielsen from the Calvinia Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit, for his role in securing the conviction and ensuring justice for victims of gender-based violence and femicide.
