MOTORISTS whose driver’s licences, learner’s licences, motor licence discs, temporary permits, professional driving permits and roadworthy certificates will expire during the Covid-19 lockdown period, will be granted a 30-day extension, after all restrictions have been lifted, to renew their documents

The Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, as from Monday also extended the validity period for the renewal of motor trade number licences during the lockdown, for a further six months, following the expiry of the lockdown period. 

Vehicle testing centres are currently closed, although Sol Plaatje Municipality spokesperson Sello Matsie indicated that permits could still be renewed at post offices.

“Expired licences have a 21-day grace period. We follow national guidelines. Your main issue would be with insurance companies if they provide a waiver but our fines can always be appealed and Covid-19 is understandable.”
