THE NORTHERN Cape Awards ceremony, which recognises and celebrates artists in the five local districts, will take place at the Northern Cape Theatre on Tuesday night.

There are various categories including best fashion designer, best trendsetter, best journalist, best government spokesperson, best dancer and best sportsperson.

Northern Cape Tourism Authority marketing communications officer Tebogo Velembo said cash prizes would be awarded to the winners.

“The ultimate entertainer with the most votes will walk away with a brand new Kia Picanto,” said Velembo.

Voting was done via SMS, where the winner in each category will be selected based on the number of votes received, with no limit placed on the number of votes permitted per voter.

The MEC for Economic Development and Tourism, Abraham Vosloo, believed the event would encourage local tourists to explore the Province.

“The event comes at a time when we are welcoming visitors to the Northern Cape for the festive season holidays. We trust the event will see visitors from other provinces of South Africa and they will further embark on the tourism sho’t left experiences to know our neighbourhood. I wish to congratulate all the winners in different categories and thank those that cast their votes for nominees,” said Vosloo.

“To all our visitors to the Northern Cape, I encourage them to explore our small dorpies, rural communities and township experiences in the five regions of the Northern Cape … engage with the locals and relish the Northern Cape’s open landscapes”.

Velembo said that FAME Academy SA, which is hosting the event with support from provincial government and other stakeholders, will open a branch in Kimberley in January 2021 to nurture and train local artists.
