The De Beers Group said it was working with the SAPS, local communities and stakeholders to find a solution to illegal mining in the Namaqualand region after lives were lost near Kleinzee during an incident that took place on June 5.

De Beers communications manager, Jackie Mapiloko, pointed out that the incident did not involve the De Beers Group or its security personnel.

“ We wish to convey our condolences to the families of the deceased during this difficult time.

“The safety of our employees and community, including illegal miners, has always been a key concern for the company, especially with regards to illegal mining activities in the Namaqualand region.”

Mapiloko added that the matter was reported and was being investigated by the South African Police Services.
