Why doesn’t the Sol Plaatje Municipality, along with interested businesses, and even some of our local churches set up a Christmas or a Festive village somewhere in our city?
Dear Sir,
What has become of our once beautiful Diamond City?
I realise that everyone says this and complains, but there seems to be absolutely no desire to remedy or arrest the downward spiral of Kimberley.
I remember walking down Jones Street as a youth around Christmas time. We would criss-cross the road with our parents in tow, stopping at every window to look at the beautiful festive displays.
The road was illuminated with festive lighting and the glow from the shop windows spilled into the street. We were happy, excited and joyous, but above all we were safe!
These days, what used to be Jones Street has become like a scene from an apocalyptic movie. The shops are shuttered, litter is strewn everywhere, and the street feels darker than they are. I would not dare walk down Phakamile Mabija Road after sunset these days.
My heart breaks for the youth. One day when they are older, they will not have happy memories like my generation does.
I know that times are tough, and that festive decorations are an extravagance that our municipality probably cannot afford, but over the years in Kimberley individuals have taken it upon themselves to decorate their gardens. These light displays and trimmings draw hundreds of visitors, as parents bring their children to enjoy the beauty.
My humble suggestion is: Why doesn’t the Sol Plaatje Municipality, along with interested businesses, and even some of our local churches set up a Christmas or a Festive village somewhere in our city?
It could be set up in one of our city’s parks, or in a parking lot or somewhere accessible, where everyone can come and be part of something positive for our city. I even imagine carollers, Nativity plays and other fun activities.
Who knows, one day down the line, it could even grow into one of those “something to do in Kimberley during the Festive Season” things. Wouldn’t that be special?
It’s November already, so it’s probably too late for this year. But down the line, maybe 2025? It doesn’t have to be extravagant at first, but something small and pretty is better than the big dark void we currently have.
Please note that I am not pushing a religious agenda. Personally, I believe that the Christmas story is beautiful, but all I am suggesting with this idea is for someone, somewhere, with some vision and a few spare rand to create something that will leave our children with a few happy memories.
Even if it’s just going to be memories of one special time of the year.
Yours sincerely,
Spyglass
