THE KIMBERLEY Magistrate’s Court recently convicted and sentenced a 33-year-old man, Kevin Steenkamp, to 15 years direct imprisonment for the violent robbery of an elderly woman in Kimberley.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said that the incident occurred on November 1 last year, at around 5pm, when the 62-year-old victim was on her way to church. She was brutally attacked at knife-point by Steenkamp on the corner of Fuller Street in West End, who stole her handbag and jewellery.

The provincial commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, praised Detective Warrant Officer Joe Vink of the Kimberley Detectives for his meticulous work on the case. She also commended the community for their assistance in apprehending Steenkamp.

Lieutenant-General Otola emphasised that crimes against women, children and vulnerable groups remain a top priority for the SAPS and assured that such incidents would be rigorously investigated.
