A 30-YEAR-old Kimberley father was sentenced to six years imprisonment for assaulting his one-year-old baby boy following an altercation with the child’s grandmother.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said the baby was found unconscious after the father threw the child to the ground during the altercation.

“On September 28, 2023, at approximately 11.30pm, the grandmother had the baby on her back when an altercation broke out between the father and the grandmother. The father grabbed the baby from the grandmother’s back and threw the child to the floor,” said Kock.

“When paramedics and the police arrived at the scene, the baby was unconscious. The baby was admitted to the hospital for medical attention and the father was arrested.

“The father was sentenced on July 29, 2024, by the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court to six years imprisonment, half of which was suspended for five years on condition that the accused is not found guilty of assault GBH during the time of the suspension. The accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.”

Kock added that the investigating officer was commended.

“Detective Constable Shawn Boer from the Kimberley SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit led the investigation that resulted in the conviction and sentence. This is a clear indication that crimes committed against children will not be tolerated and detectives will continue to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice,” Kock said.
