DECIDING what to do after school is not always the easiest thing to do. There are so many fields you can choose from, but one thing is sure, choose you will have to. Be it a doctor, a lawyer, a police officer, or something very different, at the end of your schooling career, you are going to have to make a decision that will affect your future going forward.

To make things a little easier for some pupils, Kimberley emergency services and the Department of Education will be hosting an Emergency Services Career Day at Memorial Road Park, next to the North Cape Mall, on Friday. The event starts at 9am and will finish at 1pm.

Fifty pupils from four different schools in Kimberley will attend the career day, where they will be able to speak to various people about choosing a career path when they are done with their schooling.

The Sol Plaatje Fire Department, public and private ambulance services, Sol Plaatje Traffic Department, South African Police Service, Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital Burn Unit, Henrietta Stockdale Nursing College and Rocket Air Ambulance will all join hands to present an action-packed educational demonstration to the youth of Kimberley.

Stalls will be on display for every career path, while fire trucks, police vehicles and helicopters will also be there.

A demonstration will be held at 8am, when the Rocket Air Ambulance will be landing. There will also be a demonstration by the fire department, where a simulation of a burning car will be conducted. Actors will be made up with fake injuries and burns and all emergency services will take part in the demonstration to show how such a scene will be handled.

Pupils and the general public will be able to interact with the different departments, speaking to the people who are actually doing the work, asking questions and getting a better understanding of what each career consists of.

So for those who are not sure in what direction they want to go after school, maybe Friday will give you an idea if any of these fields are what you might be interested in.
