THE KALAHARI Arts and Heritage Festival is returning for its fourth edition, promising a vibrant celebration of Khoi and San culture on January 24 and 25.

This annual event, held in the picturesque Kalahari village of Rietfontein, continues to honour the rich heritage, language and identity of Southern Africa’s Khoi and San communities.

The festival serves as a powerful platform for these communities, who have endured centuries of colonial oppression, cultural erasure, and ongoing socio-economic challenges. It aims to amplify their voices and support efforts for cultural preservation and recognition.

“We are excited to host the fourth edition of this important festival,” said festival director Helena Steenkamp. “This event offers a space for Khoi and San communities to reconnect with their roots, heal from past traumas, and celebrate their rich cultural heritage.”

The two-day festival in the remote Kalahari village of Rietfontein will feature an impressive line-up of cultural performances, including traditional music, dance, theatre, and art exhibitions.

Participants from South Africa, Namibia and Botswana will converge to share their unique traditions and stories, with future editions expected to expand to include Khoi and San communities from Angola and Zimbabwe.

Workshops and panel discussions focused on capacity building and arts development will also be part of the festival. These initiatives aim to empower Khoi and San artists, providing opportunities to showcase their talents and connect with broader audiences.

The Kalahari Arts and Heritage Festival is organised by the Africa Human Rights Film Festival, a non-profit organisation committed to empowering marginalised African communities. This year’s event is supported by the National Arts Council of South Africa and the President’s Economic Stimulus Project.
